As I said when launching this site, sometimes I’d like to post some off topic and “fun” content.

Being a fan of technology, and more recently AI, I believe we have a treasure trove of amusing material. AI is a remarkable technology, destined for myriad uses in our future. That being said, it’s essential (and humorous!) to acknowledge its current state versus its future potential.

My family often has a blast at dinner with “Seeing what the AI makes” – where I crowdsource ideas for prompts from my wife and daughters (ages 8 and 3) for Midjourney to create… “art.” The results can be hilarious, both in terms of the prompts themselves and what the AI generates.

Separately, my family has always been a fan of the humor of Cakewrecks and similar endeavors…

… so why not merge these interests?

Thus, I present to you “AI Wrecks” – a showcase of the best of the worst creations AI has conjured up this week. Whether it be sketchy Bard or ChatGPT responses, bizarre Midjourney images, or something else entirely, let’s all share a laugh at the robotic overlords soon to reign over us.

(and yes, I know prompt tuning can prevent all of the below, but this is waaay more fun than posting carefully crafted images that took 12 draft prompts to produce…)

Week 1: I don’t think it means what you think it means…

What better way to kick things off than with a Princess Bride reference?

Recently, my daughters were on a mermaid kick, and we asked Midjourney for variations on “A mermaid riding a whale, with a ship in the background” … and BOY did we get results.

… soooo apparently a mermaid is just “A girl near water”, sometimes without legs. Don’t worry, she is “one with nature” – in this case the whale. And ignore the ambiguity as to whether we’re underwater or flying in this picture. Or the ship that turns into a shell in the background.

Sometimes, the girl is fine, but the ship and the whale kind of … meld together… while she holds a random dismembered jib / spar .. and likely measures close to 70 feet / 22 meters tall. OK, so the girl is not fine…(And still not a mermaid)

Other times the girl rides the whale, clutching… a miniature ship? Whilst a disfigured small person sits behind her and the whale has … an intriguing arrangement of flippers and limbs, not to mention its unnerving visage…

So yeah… mermaids… riding whales… with ships in the background. Totally nailed it.
